Poole's cavern and Buxton Country Park is an excellent day out for school educational visits.
Our trained guides can deliver a tour of the cavern to suit any age and ability. The new visitor centre 'Wonderground' exhibition and 'The making of a hollow land' film explains the history and geology of the Peak District and how water has created these fascinating caves. Archaeologists have shown that during the Romano-British period the cave was extensively used. The story of this and the incredible mix of water, Limestone and time to create this hidden landscape is all explained on the cave tour.
New .Interactive archaeology display, Discover how our ancestors used the caves 2000 years ago and try out our archaeological dig. Come face to face with an iron age cave dweller.
New is a classroom/study room for groups to use for a private teaching space please enquire for booking this room. To compliment the cave tour we now have a brand new audio/visual presentation room for educational visits.
Buxton Country Park
The 100 acres of woodland on the slopes of Grin Low hill hide a fascinating history of industrial toil and changing land use. The woodland was planted in 1820 by the 6th Duke of Devonshire to hide the scars of industrial Lime burning. The woodlands are today a Site Of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its rare botanical species. Paths lead from the car park and a 30 minute walk leads to Solomon's Temple, a Victorian Folly viewpoint built on the site of a prehistoric burial ground with great views of the High Peak area.
The cavern is open all year for pre-booked groups of 10 or more from 9.30am until 5pm.Guided tours leave from the visitor centre every 20 minutes throughout the day. Early evening tours can also be booked by special arrangement. N.B. Discount group prices are not available for evening groups. Normal rates apply.
